Thank you Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle
At OLA's April 20 annual membership meeting, Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle
attended and addressed OLA members on the topic of cormorant control. She
acknowledged cormorants' devastation of the lake's fishery and economy, and
spoke positively about the multi-million dollar economic benefit of
controlling this invasive species. She reminded us that this is a difficult
time for federal budgets and committed to find ways to continue this
successful program without burdening taxpayers with it.
The OLA Board of Directors thanks Congresswoman Buerkle for her attention to
this historically important issue, and thanks all the OLA members who wrote,
called, and e-mailed her staff to remind them that cormorants need to be
controlled. We are excited about the possibility that legislators will
finally start to meaningfully address Oneida Lake's needs after ignoring the
lake for several years. We'll keep our members updated as the Congresswoman
and her staff work on the cormorant problem.
